Following on from the hugely successful Gardens of Remembrance Initiative, developed by Senator Mark Daly and Landscape designer Diarmuid Gavin, the Tidy Towns Unit of the Department of Environment, Community and Government have announced that they will be awarding points to towns who have set up 1916 Gardens of Remembrance in their towns.
The TidyTowns Unit met with the adjudicators in late February 2016. At this meeting they alerted the adjudicators to the two initiatives; The Seven Trees for Seven Signatories and The Gardens of Remembrance. We have also circulated subsequent material received.
At the meeting it was decided that committees would gain points, where appropriate, under existing relevant categories within the competition, namely; Community Involvement and Planning, Landscaping and Open Spaces and Wildlife, Habitats and Natural Amenities. They feel this was the fairest manner to deal with these two initiatives. The TidyTowns competition treats all its entrants consistently and to reward some committees with extra marks under a special category, outside of the general confines of the competition, might skew the result this year or in coming years.
