In the Seanad on the 19th of July I led the opposition and called for the formal invitation to be extended to Louise O’Keeffe to address the Seanad.
Louise O’Keeffe fought and won a 30 year battle for justice in the European Court of Human Rights against the Irish State who failed to protect her from abuse in national school. Louise would be addressing the Seanad as a representative of child abuse victims in Ireland and inform us on what needs to be done to protect and support victims, who the State continues to fail.

Daly calls on the Government to apply for Presidential Decree for Halawa
Fianna Fáil Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Diaspora Mark Daly has called on the Government to formally apply for a presidential decree for Ibrahim Halawa under Law 140.
Commenting on the issue Senator Daly said, “The decision this week to postpone Ibrahim Halawa’s trial for the 14th time is extremely disappointing and at this stage simply unacceptable. This situation can no longer be allowed to continue indefinitely.
“Whilst the trial date has been postponed until October 2nd, I do not have any faith at this juncture given the events over the past three years that this will actually result in any decision either way in this case.
“For that reason I have called for the Government to formally apply in writing to the relevant Egyptian authorities for a presidential degree under Law 140. Law 140 would allow Ibrahim to be transferred to Ireland before a final decision would be made in the case. I believe that this needs to be done as a matter of urgency.
“Furthermore, I have also asked that Ibrahim’s legal team be invited to appear before the Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee to outline developments in this case and options available to the Government to secure his release. I called for this during the last Dáil term, but it was disallowed. I hope on this occasion that my request will be granted.
“Ireland needs to send a strong message that this treatment of one of our citizens is unacceptable and at this stage is wholly unjustifiable.”
