Government only allows TD to debate 2% of the laws that come into effect each year, the power grab must stop.

The Government only allows TD’s to debate 2% of the laws that come into effect each year, according to research done by Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly.

“The power grab must stop’ said Senator Daly. The power that Ministers have to make laws and even amend existing Irish law without having to even consult TD’s is extraordinary. ‘By a stroke of a ministerial pen they can make changes to laws passed by TD’s. Ministers also have the power to make additions to any EU law and they don’t even have to consult TD’s before signing it into Irish law”.

Senator Daly came to national prominence when he forced a recall of the Seanad this summer to debate and vote on the first ever Organ Donation l legislation in the history of the state that was signed into law by Minister Reilly without TD’s seeing it.

This is another broken election promise by Fine Gael. In their election manifesto they promised to reduced the power of ministers. They promised they would stop ministers signing laws into effect without allowing TD’s to see them first.

‘Fine Gael promised to give power to TD’S and take power from Ministers by having all EU laws scrutinised by TD’s before they are signed into law, this has not happened. TD’s are being bypassed on 98% of the laws that come into effect in Ireland every year. The power grab must stop” said Senator Daly.
