Senator Mark Daly welcomes the publication of the report into allegations of Child Abuse by 17 members of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.

As a result of the Senator,  using Parliamentary privilege,  naming a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart  (MSC) on the 26th of July 2011 an investigation was started by the National Council for Safe Guarding Children, who’s report into the order was published today.

On the Day following the Senators speech the MSC issued a press release in which they stated that all allegations know to them had been reported to the authorities. It is now clear that this was not the case.

More information emerged regarding the number of alleged perpetrators involved and the frequency of the abuse. Specific complaints were made in August 2011 to the Garda Siochana which lead to a formal investigation and the arrest of three members of the Order in April all of whom had  worked in a Boarding School at Carrignavar Co. Cork.

Of the known 17 alleged perpetrators identified by the investigation, 6 of them are know to have worked with the secondary boarding school, although not all at the same time.

The Senator said  “it is clear form the report that members of the order in positions of leadership were aware that abuse was admitted to by particular members. However there are also records of correspondence with the Garda in respect of these members in which no reference is made to their admission of the alleged abuse”

“I wish to state my admiration to all those who have come forward to help with this investigation. Having met with some of those who have suffered greatly because of the allegedly abused I have the the greatest of respect for their courage and their bravery “
